      Abstract

When [3H]cholesterol was given orally to rats with thoracic lymph fistulas, the recovery of radioactive cholesterol in lymph was about two-fold more in hypercholesteremic rats than in the control during the first 6 h after administration. On the contrary, in the intact rat (without lymph fistula), the recovery in plasma and liver at 6 h was rather less in the hypercholesteremic group than in the control. As cholesterol absorption in animals with the fistula was not influenced by the enterohepatic circulation of cholesterol and bile acids, it might differ from that of the intact animal, especially in the hypercholesteremic rat. This point should be considered in measuring cholesterol absorption by thoracic lymph cannulation.
On the other hand, in the intact animal, cholesterol transport from plasma to liver was also suppressed with increasing size of the cholesterol pool.
