The FORT test: Reply to Dr Harma and colleagues

      In their letter to the Editor, Dr. M.I. Harma and colleagues claim that there are a number of problems associated with the d-ROMs test and related tests, such as the FORT. For example, the letter claims that a problem with the d-ROMs test is that it fails to show a linear correlation with H2O2, suggesting that the d-ROMs test is a poor measure of oxidative stress. Whether or not this problem truly exists with the d-ROMs test is unclear, because the article cited by Harma and colleagues fails to show any data on the analyses they conducted between the d-ROMs test and H2O2 [

      ]. In any event, we do not think this problem exists with the FORT. In fact, we would like to report that our own in vitro studies have found a strong linear correlation between the FORT and H2O2 (Fig. 1). In an additional in vitro study, we found a strong linear correlation between the FORT and lipid hydroperoxides (R2 = .91). These in vitro studies suggest the FORT may be a useful marker of oxidative stress.
