HMGB1 promotes IL-1beta production in vascular smooth muscle cells via activation of NLRP3 inflammasome

Aim: The phenotypic modulation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) is a key cellular event driving vascular remodeling. Recent studies have identified HMGB1 as a principal effector to mediate biological functions in VSMCs, however, the molecular mechanisms by which elicits VSMC responses are poorly defined. Thus, we investigated the role of HMGB1 on the production of inflammatory cytokines in VSMCs as well as the underlying molecular mechanisms.
